Gary Peters Top 40 Votes in 20 Short Months
A short description of many of the contributions that Gary Peters made in Congress during his first 2 years. Clear and indisputable proof that Gary Peters is the man that Oakland County needs in Congress - a REAL Independent.
1 - ObamaCare - Voted FOR a great new health care system which will help millions of people. Although special interests used scare tactics to deceive the American public - the fact is - ObamaCare is good for the country. And once it becomes fully implemented, it will enjoy universal support in spite of negative attacks being made by extremists.
Gary Peters was a key vote for ObamaCare. It passed by only a couple votes. Without Gary Peters vote, America would not have it. It was passed in one of the most transparent processes in history, the bill being posted on the Internet for 72 hours before the vote. It is deficit neutral, and is paid for by taxes on businesses and the rich who were responsible for creating the health care mess.
2 - Stimulus Spending - Voted FOR $862 billion in stimulus spending to keep unemployment low. By creating millions of new, high-paying jobs with this plan, America is on its way to economic recovery. But it will take time. After 8 years of failed policies by the previous administration, our transition to Green Jobs and a Bright Future is on its way. Gary Peters hopes that Congress will pass even more Stimulus packages soon, so that our recovery can be sped up even more.
3 - Standing up against special interests - Gary Peters stood up against the extremists and just-say-no Republicans in Congress by voting 94.7% of the time with the Democrat position - to bring change to America - according to the Washington Post. And almost all of his dissenting votes were for administrative matters or preliminary votes. Gary Peters voted with the pro-America Democrats on the final votes, which are the ones that matter. And according to GovTrack.US, which tracks every vote, through August 10, 2010 Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Gary Peters differed on their votes on only 7 out of 1,508 total Roll Call votes.

Even the Speaker of the House follows Gary Peters lead, and he is only in his first term. No other member of Congress seems to vote as consistently with Gary Peters as Nancy Pelosi. His courage and independent ways have inspired even the elite of Washington. While others have buckled under the pressure of partisan politics and Washington-as-usual - Gary Peters has stood strong - placing his principles over partisanship. A true independent resolved to change America.
4 - Support for the Troubled Asset Relief Program - On December 11, 2009 Congressman Gary Peters voted to prevent a Republican effort in Congress to redirect unspent TARP money to pay down the deficit. This blatant attempt by the right to placate Tea Party extremists would have hindered finding new ways to spend this money to help the economy and bring change to America. With his independent action, Gary Peters proved that he is just the kind of independent leader that Oakland County and America needs.
5 - Medicare Trust Fund - Gary Peters does not just spend money as his critics would make you believe. He SAVES things, too. He voted FOR cutting over half-a-trillion dollars from Medicare. Thanks to Gary Peters, preventative health services for Senior Citizens will now be absolutely free. These costs will be paid for with government money. So the cost to senior citizens will be zero. Not one dime will come out of their pockets. And by taking half a trillion dollars from Medicare, Gary Peters was able to push back the time when Medicare will run out of money. Additional cuts to Medicare by Congress may be possible in the future, adding even more years to the program.
6 - Cap and Trade - Voted FOR Cap-and-Trade which limits carbon emissions from United States companies. This is a key step in making sure that America is front-and-center in our fight against Global Warming. Dirty businesses will be assessed almost a trillion dollars in fines if they do not comply with environmentally-friendly requirements. These fees will then go to companies that ARE playing by the rules. The result? A clean, free, vibrant America!!! Clean air to breathe. Clean water to drink. And green energy to replace the pollution caused by the profit-seeking oil companies. It is deficit-neutral, so it won't cost Americans one dime.
7 - Wall Street Reform - Voted FOR Wall Street Reform. After many years as Vice President for both the bailed-out Merrill Lynch and Paine Webber, Gary Peters learned from the inside all about corporate improprieties. From his ideal vantage-point, he could see first-hand how the corporate greed that caused our economic crisis was wrecking our economy. And corporate greed and improprieties grew into the current economic crisis - after Gary Peters left Wall Street to become a public servant. Armed with this knowledge, he became a key figure in Congress in straightening out Wall Street.
Washington had been lax in coming to the rescue of Main Street. Before Gary Peters arrived in the Capitol in 2008, the country had suffered through 8 years of divisive partisanship and failed policies. Government reaction was slowed by the United States Constitution, legal requirements and Republican inaction. With Wall Street Reform, companies "too-big-to-fail" can now be taken over by Washington almost instantly, without being impaired by the United States Constitution, legal technicalities, Tea Party protests, or Republican negativism.
Gary Peters showed true leadership by standing up to Wall Street. The passage of Gary Peters' Wall Street Reform will potentially place our financial institutions under government control to replace the free market economy which ran amok. Gary Peters also made sure that patriotic government entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were protected from citizen oversight, so that they are better able to help America - like they have for years.
8 - Taxpayer-Funded Abortion - Voted AGAINST the Stupak Amendment, which would have prevented the use of taxpayer funds for abortions. Low-income women have been victims of far-right-wing extremists for too many years. While rich women could afford an abortion, those less fortunate could not afford to do so. This inequity made it more difficult for the poor, and saddled society with the costs of taking care of millions of their unwanted babies. Gary Peters stood up against religious bigots by fighting to provide taxpayer funds to help these women in need.
9 - Elected Office Crimes - Voted FOR the Elected Office Crimes bill on May 7, 2009. Right-wing extremists had made many unproven and unfair accusations against patriotic organizations like the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). ACORN has been an important voice of the people, registering millions of people to help cause the right people to get elected to Congress and other public offices. Under the bill, ACORN will be able to receive additional taxpayer money to fund its efforts. This will help counter the harsh and unfair treatment they have received from Tea Party extremists, the media and law enforcement agencies around America. Congressman Gary Peters looks forward to receiving their continued help - to keep a Democrat Congress in 2010.
10 - Appreciation for our Public Servants - Voted FOR the Parental Leave for Federal Employees Act on May 7, 2009. With this vote, Congressman Gary Peters sent a strong, clear message to SEIU, AFSCME, and other federal employee unions -We support our public servants.
Congressman Peters voted for the Parental Leave for Federal Employees Act to improve the Family Leave laws for the people that do the most good for the country - our federal employees. While most people will continue to receive 12 weeks of unpaid leave, federal employees will now get paid for 4 of their 12 weeks. This new law will increase fairness and equity for our loyal but underappreciated civil servants.
